Waving Chatsworth bear carved by David Evans The Novice sections of Chatsworth ran on Saturday 16th May. The Ian Stark designed course, built by David Evans and his team, jumped very well despite ground conditions that were far from perfect after the torrential downpours of the previous two days. One jump, a skinny brush at the Bower water complex, was pulled on Saturday afternoon due to deteriorating ground conditions coming out of the water. David Evans and his course building team worked hard throughout the day putting stone down onto take-offs and landings, and also to gallops across damp areas of ground that were cutting up.

Resulting from torrential rain showers on both the Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening, the Advanced and FEI World Cup sections, due to run on Sunday 17th, were cancelled due to the very poor ground conditions. Prior to the decision being made to cancel on Saturday night, a number of changes had been made to the course with obstacles taken out and alterations to some areas of the track between fences.

While the bulk of the jumps on both the Novice and Advanced cross country courses remained relatively unchanged from previous years, there were a number of significant new questions asked by the Ian Stark designed tracks for 2009. These included a new advanced loop close to the start of the course incorporating a pair of large brush oxers and an into-space rail dropping off a steep slope before the sunken road complex. New to the Bower water complex was a pair of nesting birds (one in the water and one after the jump out) carved by David Evans.

Significant changes to Ian Starks Novice track included a new log-ditch-log complex above the ice pond, a pair of handsome lions carved by David Evans, and a pair of offset logs close to the finish.
